### CS 3740: Computer Organization

#### Due Friday, April 15, 2016, at the beginning of class

You may email a plain text, MS Word or PDF document to the instructor with subject line "cs3740,hwk1", or turn in a hardcopy. (If handwritten, please write neatly.)

This is an individual assignment. All work must be your own. You should not look at any other student's work (in whole or in part, on paper or on screen), nor allow anyone else to look at yours, during the course of this assignment.

Unless specified otherwise, all questions are from "The Essentials of Computer Organization and Architecture, 4th Ed." by Null and Lobur. They are exercises, not review questions.

1. Chapter 5, Exercise #13. (Provide the equation, not the result of the calculation.)

2. Chapter 5, Exercise #15. (Draw out the contents of the stack as the RPN expression evaluation proceeds step-by-step.)

3. Chapter 5, Exercise #17.

4. Chapter 5, Exercise #25.

5. Chapter 5, Exercise #28.

6. Chapter 5, Exercise #30.

7. Look up current (2016) costs, in USA dollars, for 1 petabyte (1,000 terabytes, or 1,000,000 gigabytes) of:

• memory, SRAM
• memory, DRAM
• flash memory, (solid state disk)
• flash memory, (USB portable flash drives)
• hard disk
• optical disks (CD, DVD)
• magnetic tape
For each type of data storage, include the exact WWW page where the item for sale can be found, the price for 1 petabyte, the price and size of one unit, and the exact and complete name of the particular item you found (make, model, identifying part number, etc).

(For example, memory might be sold in 1 GB units. So include the price for 1 GB and the fact that the unit is only 1 GB, then calculate and include the price for 1 PB.)
