John attended Holy Cross Seminary for three years before studying at Duquesne University. He graduated with a BA in Classics and Philosophy. After he got his first master's degree in Library Science at the University of Pittsburgh, he worked at Penn State University first as Periodicals Librarian, and then the Assistant Librarian for Commonwealth Campuses and Continuing Education. He was an avid reader and he was known by his friends and family for his knack with words and language. John also enjoyed local theater and playing poker with a close group of friends. An avid woodworker, and general Mr. Fix It, he prided himself on being able to repair and fix pretty much everything around the house.
