INFORMATIONAL STATEMENT FOR CFA
REGARDING POSSIBLE STRIKE BY CSU
from the California Faculty
circulating on some CSU campuses that the recently recognized union of CSU
teaching assistants and other student employees, the UAW, may go on strike this
The UAW has
not communicated with CFA about plans for any work actions including a walkout,
nor has it asked for support of any kind.
information for faculty members related to this rumorÉ
- CFA supports the right of CSU
teaching assistants and graduate student employees to organize and
negotiate a fair contract.
- CFA urges the UAW to extend
appropriate courtesies and notification of its intentions to the other CSU
unions, as labor union allies with a common interest to improve and
preserve the lives of all who work in the CSU.
- To our knowledge, the UAW
parent organization has not sanctioned job actions by its affiliated local
representing teaching assistants in the CSU. Also, we are not aware that any other labor bodies such
as central labor councils or the California State Federation of Labor have
sanctioned such a job action.
- Without such a sanction, and
without any requests for support or even any information provided to us by
the UAW, it is premature for CFA to take a public position regarding
possible picket lines or job actions.
- During the life of Unit 3Õs
contract, we are prohibited from engaging in strikes or other concerted
activity that would interfere with or adversely affect the operations of
the mission of the CSU.
- CFA is an honorable member of
organized labor, and stands in solidarity with other unions as
appropriate. CFA is SEIU Local 1983, and many CFA campus chapters are
affiliated with their regional central labor councils and have a history
of strong support for other unions. Two recent examples of CFAÕs
commitment to solidarity are the active support we gave to the unions in
the grocery workers strike/lockout in Southern California and the hotel
workers strike/lockout in San Francisco. The same spirit can be expected
to inform our reaction to any sanctioned UAW job action.
these facts and other legal considerations, if a UAW walkout occursÉ
- CFA does not bind members to
honor UAW/TA picket lines or participate in their walkout.
- Unit 3 members should not
perform the work of striking TAs.
- CFA recognizes that each
faculty member who is the instructor of record for a class is responsible
for the delivery of that class through final exams and grading. We also
have long recommended that faculty members who are employed only to teach
specific classes should avoid taking on additional duties beyond their
