Rules For Super Users
Here are some rules for you who are functioning as super users on the CS
project machines. (Naturally, there are many other rules. You will read
about some and think of others on your own.)
- Do not change the root password
- Do not change the name of the computer
- Do not change entries in the password or shadow files unless you
completely understand what you are doing and you are sure it is OK.
- Do not tell anyone who is not in the class the root password.
- Corollary I: Do not utter the root password when there is even a
remote chance of being overheard.
- Corollary II: do not leave the written password where
an unauthorized person can see it.
