LIBRARY PROJECT ASSIGNMENT USE ON-LINE LIBRARIES AS A RESEARCH TOOL For this project you will need to pick a research topic. You may choose a topic just for fun or you can pick a serious one. If you like, it could be the same topic you chose for your web search project. Use our University's on-line library catalog (OLLIE), the on-line library catalog for the University of California (MELVYL) and a third on-line library catalog that you select yourself. From each library find three publications (books or periodicals) related to your research topic. That is a total of nine publications. As you do your searches keep a record of the title, author, publisher, and location (i.e. which catalog) of each publication you select. Here is a simple way to do that: When you get results from a search, select the text, copy it, and paste it into a word processor document. (Don't forget to make copies on your backup disk. :^) YOUR REPORT Use Microsoft Word 98 or another word processor to put together a nicely- formatted report that includes first a statement of your research topic and why you chose it, and second the information (title, author, publisher) you collected about the nine publications. Group the information by location (name of the on-line catalog): List three publications under the heading "OLLIE", three under the heading "MELVYL", and three under the name of the third on-line catalog you chose. The information should be formatted uniformly: regardless of how the catalogs happen to display the information, you must decide on the format for your report, and you must use that same format under each catalog heading. Use formatting options such as boldface, indenting, and so forth to create an attractive and readable report. Your report must include headers and footers on all the pages. The header must contain your name, class identifier (CS 4000), the words "Library Project", and the due date. The footer must contain the page numbers. THE DUE DATE FOR THIS PROJECT Check the class schedule for the due date. Late projects will not be accepted. HOW TO TURN IN THIS PROJECT Turn in the project in class on the due date or on any class day before the due date. Put your paper on the desk before class starts. ================================================== ==================================================
