SECOND LAB ASSIGNMENT While you are working on the steps given below, I will be demonstrating them. Ask for assistance if you have any problems. FORMAT FLOPPIES AND CREATE A BACKUP DISK The procedure for formatting a floppy disk varies a little bit, depending on the version of the Mac operating system you are using. One version of the procedure is detailed in the steps below. Try to follow along, even if the steps you have to do on your computer are slightly different. 1. Insert one of your new floppy disks into the disk drive. Wait for a dialog box to appear. If it does not appear, choose "Erase Disk" from the "Special" menu. 2. The dialog box contains a panel where you can fill in a name for your disk. You may name it CS 4OOO or whatever you choose. This disk will be your primary floppy disk. You will use it to store the primary copies of the files you create. Type in the name you choose. Next make sure that the format selected is a Macintosh format. Then click on the OK, Initialize, or Erase button to proceed with formatting. 3. Another dialog box may warn you that initializing your disk will erase all the information on it. You aren't concerned about that because your disk is new and has no information on it. Click on the Continue or Erase button to go on with the process. 4. Wait for the computer to finish initializing and verifying the disk and then drag the disk icon to the trash can icon, when the trash icon becomes highlighted let go of the mouse button. This will do two things: it will Put Away the disk and also eject the disk. 5. Insert your second disk and repeat steps 1 through 4, adding 'backup' to the name on your second disk (e.g., CS 4000 backup). This disk will be your backup floppy disk. In case something on your primary disk is erased or corrupted unintentionally, you will keep second copies (backups) on this disk. SAVE A Microsoft Word DOCUMENT TO FLOPPIES 6. Find the Microsoft Word application on the hard disk 7. Launch the Microsoft Word application 8. Create a small Microsoft Word file by typing some random words and saving the file to your primary floppy disk 9. Quit Microsoft Word (Don't just close the window. Go to the File menu and choose the Quit option.) 10. Make a backup copy of your small file. In other words, copy your small file onto your backup disk. Here's how to do it: Copy your file to the Temp folder on the hard disk. Put away your primary floppy disk by dragging its icon to the trash. Put your backup floppy disk in the drive and copy your file from the Temp folder to your backup disk. Finally drag the copy of the file from the Temp folder to the trash and empty the trash. Remember that files stored on floppy disks are somewhat unstable. In case of loss of information on the media, it is your responsibility to keep backups of all your important files. Think about how often you should do a backup of your work. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that you have backed up everything that you are unwilling or unable to re-do. WORK ON THE WORD PROCESSING ASSIGNMENT Now launch Microsoft Word again and start working on your word processing (glossary) assignment. ================================================== ==================================================
