FIRST LAB ASSIGNMENT While you are working on the steps given below, I will be demonstrating them. Ask for assistance if you have any problems. MACINTOSH BASICS 1. Close any windows that are open on the desk top. Here's how: Position the mouse pointer on the Close Box in the upper left hand corner of the window and click (press and release) the mouse button. After closing all open windows, check the Applications Menu and exit from any applications that you don't need to use. To do that, you select each application from the Applications Menu, and then choose Quit or the equivalent from the File Menu of the application. Remember to do these steps whenever you begin working on a computer in the public lab. It will free up memory you need, and head-off potential problems. 2. Select the hard disk and open the hard disk window A. Move the mouse pointer to the hard disk icon and click. This selects the hard disk. To indicate it has been selected, it changes color or darkens. If nothing seems to happen, it may be because the the hard disk is already selected. Go on to step B below. B. Position the mouse pointer on the hard disk icon and double click the mouse button. The hard disk window opens. 3. Next locate the Applications folder icon in the window of the hard disk, and select it. Double click on it to open its window. Inside that window, locate the Macintosh Basics folder, select the icon, and open its window. Now locate the Macintosh Basics application icon, select it, and double click on it to start the program. Follow the on- screen prompts and directions. Complete the tutorials on all the topics offered. Repeat this exercise later if you feel you need more practice. IDENTIFY YOUR PRINTER If there is time remaining, check the chooser and determine which printer is selected. TRY OUT Microsoft Word 98 If you still have some time left, choose "find" from the File menu of the Finder. Search for and launch the Microsoft Word 98 application. Create a small file, and print it. Practice using the controls on the document window. Make sure you understand how to enlarge the window, how to shrink it, and how to scroll through it. Quit Microsoft Word (Don't just close the window. Go to the File menu and choose the Quit option.) ================================================== ==================================================
