A level-two version of program #1 is due MONDAY. Get started on this soon, while the Hello World! assignment is still fresh in your mind.

     Here's the schedule for the review\tutorial
     sessions for CS1500 and CS2500

     CS1500 Monday and Friday 12:15 pm to 1:05 pm
     CS2500 Wednesday 11:10 am to 12:00pm

     We will meet in the conference room (the
     little room next to the CS lab).  If the
     students have questions about the reviews,
     they can e-mail me at
     gvargas@castor.csustan.edu.

These sessions will commence on Monday, 02/26/2001.

I'm going to be away at a meeting one week from today, Feb 28. Students will work on program #1 in the lab that day. Julie Gorman will be in charge.

Show the class a sample of what they should have turned in for the "Hello World" assignment.
Show class where to go in web space to find examples of level-one, two, and three programs and tests.
Finish discussion of what goes into each level of a top-down design.
Explain that students will be turning in levels of programs.
Discuss programming assignment #1.
- What is the assignment?
- How do we get the data files? (See ftp_how_to file in the assignment directory)
- Where do we put the data files?
- Design considerations. See the three help files in the assignment directory: algorithmDesign.jpg, dataDesign.jpg, and designConsiderations.
Show example of reading e-mail on the Sun Ultra's.
The compiler command option for naming the executable file:
(g++ -o letters letters.cpp)
Discuss compiling/debugging with jove
- How to execute the compiler "inside" jove: (C-u, C-x, C-e)
- C-x 1 "unsplits" the screen.
- How to break out of jove to a sub-shell whilst "saving your place": (M-s)
- Testing the program while in the sub-shell.
- How to break out of the sub-shell and return to "your place" in jove: (exit)
