Hello World Lab Help Sheet
Notes to help prepare for doing the Hello World assignment
- If you don't see the login screen, just tap the space bar. If that doesn't work, raise your hand for help.
- Work like this - ONE of the partners logs in and does all the typing at the keyboard. The other partner sits beside the first one and helps check that all the typing is correct, and helps make sure that all the directions are followed. Alternate in these roles, so, for example, one partner could type for the even numbered labs and the other for the odd numbered labs. If I see both partners using lab computers, I will tell one of them to log out.
- When using JOVE, you can't do anything with the mouse, except paste text from another window. Use the keyboard. (This may seem inconvenient, but remember JOVE works fine when you do a remote login, and also its possible to work faster by typing.) The arrow keys may not work either. Below are some basic JOVE commands you may need (these are "control" commands made by holding down the control key and typing another character).
- Delete key or C-h -- either of these deletes the character to the left of the cursor
- C-d -- deletes the character under the cursor
- C-b -- this moves the cursor back one character (newline is a character)
- C-p -- this moves the cursor up to the previous line
- C-f -- this moves the cursor forward one space (newline is a character)
- C-n -- this moves the cursor down to the next line
Note:
- You have to make characters at the end of a line before you can move to those positions on the line
- You have to make newlines with the return (enter) key before you can move to those lines
- There is a link to a help sheet of JOVE commands in the directions for "Hello World"
- If you use the TextEdit program instead of JOVE, then you should navigate to your home directory before saving the p1.cpp file. Raise your hand if you don't know how to do this navigation step. I'll show you.
- If the compiler g++ gives you an error message, you need to re-enter JOVE and edit the p1.cpp file to fix the error. Look for the line number in the error message. The message itself may be hard to understand at first. Ask your instructor questions about what your error messages mean. After a while they will be much more intelligible.
- If you have problems you can't solve easily, raise your hand right away, so someone can help you and you can get finished with the lab in a reasonable amount of time.
