Week 05 Notes for CS 1500 -- Fall 2001
Take roll.
Announcements
- Solo #1 is due Monday, October 1
- I posted grades on lab #1 and lab #2
- I will pass back your printouts for lab #1
- We are having a quiz this week. It will be on chapters
1-3 of Shiflet and chapters 1-3, 5-9 of Anderson. Most
of the questions will be on material in Shiflet.
Perhaps 20% will be on material from Anderson. Check
the study guide file for advice on some things to
study. BRING A BLUE BOOK TO CLASS -- THE SMALL SIZE,
PLEASE.
- I hope you have all turned in lab #3 by now. If not,
please find some time on your own to finish it up and
e-mail it in ASAP. Note: follow written directions
very closely -- be sure to turn in both source code and
script.
Check what's new in schedule

- ex0307.cpp
Check out some examples that illustrate information in
chapter #4
- ex0405.cpp
- ex0407.cpp
- ex0408.cpp
- ex0411.cpp
-
Take questions from class on the examples above, and on
problems they are studying for the quiz
What we are supposed to know about functions and scope:
- how value parameters are passed
- why an expression can be used as an actual value parameter
- The fact that a variable can be used as an actual parameter when
the name of the variable is not the same as the name of the formal
parameter.
- understanding the scope of a local variable.
- understanding that a called function cannot change the caller's
copy of a parameter passed by value.
- global variables are special: visible everywhere in the file after
where they are declared, except where they are "masked" by a local
variable.
-
Work some of these problems for review:
- p. 28, #6
- p. 65, #14
- p. 74, #17
- p. 92, #3
- p. 115, #1
