Week 01 Notes for CS 1500 -- Fall 2001

• Take roll (check off names on the roster) and individually give course handouts to those who are registered and present.
  
  
  Course handout includes: course description, JOVE help sheet, and directions for the "Hello World!" get-acquainted lab assignment. All these materials are available online. Anyone may download them at these URL's:

• Resolve names on lab, lecture lists. (i.e. Advise students who are registered for the lecture but not the lab to add the lab, and vice-versa. If possible, bring add forms to class to get the ball rolling on this immediately.)
  
  
• Get updated wait list. (i.e. ask all present who want to add the class to put their name, student ID number, and class level on a sheet of paper. I will try to make a determination of who gets in to the class and give notice on the next class meeting.)

• Announcement(s)
  • Week 01 is short: each section meets only one day (Thursday or Friday )
  • First labs are next week on Wednesday and Thursday.
  • After we get settled, most labs will be at the end of the week.
  • Labs will be held in P-288. Show P-288 on map
  
  
  
• Introduce text books. Shiflet's big textbook is for learning C++. Andersen's little book is for learning how to use the Sun Ultra's.
  
  
• Pass around and collect sign-up sheets for new accounts. Everybody who is registered or wants to register should fill one out and turn it in, unless s/he is sure that s/he already has an account on the Computer Science Department Sun Ultra's *and* s/he remembers her/his username and password.
  
  
• If time allows, I may go over information in the course description. (My substitute need not bother with this.)
  
  
• Assignment:
  • Students need to read and study the Hello World! assignment to prepare for performing the assignment in lab next week. I will go over some of the steps early next week, and the class will perform the lab in the middle of next week.
  • If possible, study the online version of the Hello World lab directions -- you will be able to follow links to advice for choosing a password and directions on logging in.
  • You can look at pp. 16-17 of your little Unix book by Andersen to get help on choosing a password.
  • You should make up a new password and have it all ready before we start lab next week.

• Lecture topic for next week: Each Sun is equivalent to the others.
  
  
• Activity for next week: Do lab partner assignments. Students may make swaps if they notify me by e-mail.
