Week 02 Notes for CS 1500, Section 001 -- Spring 2001

• Take Roll.
• Look at upcoming schedule: two labs this week. Turn in Friday's lab #1 printouts Monday or Wednesday of next week. Solo program #1 is due two weeks from today.
• Announcement(s)
  • Good news: we now have CS 1500 in P-100. This means the class can grow to accommodate all people currently on the waiting list.
  • Hand out signed add forms to the students on the waitlist.
• Pass out accounts
• Announcement: Don't be confused by reading section 3.8 of Andersen. On our Sun Ultra System, you need to use the command "nispasswd" to change your password. The "passwd" command will not do the trick on our system. Nispasswd is required to distribute the information around to all the Sun Ultra's.
• Remind students that each team is expected to send me an error free source file and a filtered script.
• Remind the students that the schedule contains a reading assignment for this week.
• Also, ask those in the group of 3 partners, and those with no partner to speak to me to get reassignment of partner.
• Begin with mass demo of how to do a login from a Sun ultra.
• Show people how to launch a browser and editor and how to get the lab assignment directions into the browser.
• Next do a demo of how to telnet to an Ultra from a Mac, and get a browser open on the desktop with directions displayed.
• Next do the same thing with an NT.
• After all that, let class go and start the Hello World! assignment.

  • Heads Up: Professor Sarraille will be away one week from today on Wednesday, February 28. Therefore the class will perform Lab #2 on Wednesday, February 28 instead of Friday, March 02. System administrator Julie Gorman will supervise the class during the lab. Professor Sarraille will be back on Friday, March 02, and will lecture that day.

    These sessions will commence on Monday, 02/26/2001.
• We do what we can of the following things:
• Show the class a sample of what they should have turned in for the "Hello World" assignment.
• Go over directions for lab01 and discuss how to do some of the steps.
  • The key idea may be this: by making simple changes to your "Hello World! program, you can write a program that prints whatever you want.
  • Demo of telnetting to a SUN
  • Demo of how to grab a copy of the program from the browser and capture it in a file:
    • use this command: cat > lab011.cpp
    • then paste in the text and do a ctrl-d (end-of-input signal).
  • Demo how to print a file:
    • use this command: lp -d csok1 filename
    • Go to printer, press select, then form feed (not line feed).
  • Alternatively to print from an "Edit" window just use menu selection.
  • Explain to class that they can print from Macs or NT's by selecting the desired text, pasting into a document, and printing the document
  • Explain that this idea can also be used to get copies of program code for labs and solo programming assignments.
  • Discuss simple C++ constructs
    • use of cout stream
    • Using string expressions with cout <<
    • Using arithmetic expressions with cout <<
    • use of endl
    • using functions
      • good for parts of programs that have to be repeated.
• Look at the assignment of Solo Prog #1 and discuss elements we need to build solution -- how do we make function calls and declare functions? Where are the examples in the text that will guide us? The example on pages 37-38 should serve well.
• Show students how to do compilation of a program with JOVE.
• Note that using JOVE as above makes debugging go easier.

  • It is not working well to print my web pages from the Sun Ultra's. To print web pages, please print from one of the NT machines or one of the Mac's.
  • The lecture room has been changed again. We are now in P-167 -- "south barn" -- for lectures -- go to P-167 on Monday.
