Governeur
Chief enemy for power of d'Aulnay from Fort Sainte Marie St John's NB
Made gov of St Louis & La Tour in 1632
Made gov of Acadia in 1650 on d'Aulnays drowning
Oliver Cromwell then ruled England, and de la Tour crossed the ocean and obtained a commission from the Protector to govern the colony, one of the stipulations being that no Catholics should be allowed to settle there. With him were associated two Englishmen, Crowne and Temple. In 1667 it was again restored to France by the treaty of Breda, and Grandfontaine, the new Governor, reported that there were only 400 souls in Acadia, more than three-fourths of whom lived in and around Port Royal; but it is probable that many had married Indians and were coureurs de bois. In 1687 the population had grown to 800. The census of 1714 gives 2,100; of 1737, 7,598; of 1747, about 12,500. After eighty years it had grown to 18,000, though there was little or no immigration.

The Rivards originally came from Tourouvre, in the Canton of Perche, France. Tourouvre was a market town, located southeast of Normandy and west of Paris. Nicolas came to Canada on March 6, 1648, (followed by brother Robert in 1660) and hired himself out to serve in Canada for three years. He came to Trois Rivieres in 1649, where many ferocious Iroquois attacks were killing people. For example, Mme. Madeleine Couteau arrived in Canada with her two daughters, Jeanne and Catherine St. Per, who had been orphans for several years. In 1647 Madeleine Couteau married Emery Coltaut, who in June 1653 fell to the murderous hands of the Iroquois. During that time her daughters married two brothers, Jeanne to Pierre Guillet and Catherine married Mathurin Guillet. The latter was a victim of the Iroquois in August 1652, near the fort of the Cap de La Madeleine. Catherine became a widow at age eighteen in these horrible circumstances.
Nicolas married Catherine St. Per in 1652. He was then Captain of the Militia until 1698. They built a huge fort with other inhabitants, and he lived there for 15 years. Our ancestors suffered unceasingly at the hands of the Iroquois. The Rivards and the Guillets (their wives' folks) and others lost courage and decided to move to a more peaceful place - Batiscan, where the Jesuit Fathers still offered concessions to encourage colonists. Nicolas received his concession, March 23, 1666. This included the manor of Batiscan proper, 2 x 40 acres near Francois Bibeau, and another 2 x 40 acres near Pierre Trottier. Batiscan was 10 miles from Cap de La Madeleine. They had to clear enough land to build a dwelling, so it took quite a while. Finally in 1668 they were in Batiscan, where their eighth child was born, a son named Jean. In 1670 a church was started in the home of Nicolas Rivard, Lt. of the Militia, with about 20 parishioners present. He was appointed church warden.
He had a liking and an aptitude for legal matters, so he acted as attorney for the inhabitants of Batiscan. In 1681 census, Batiscan had 48 families - 261 people; 3 Rivard families:
Nicolas, 60 yrs., wife Catherine St. Per, 10 children
Robert, 43 yrs., wife Madeleine Guillet, 7 children
Nicolas, son of Nicolas, wife Elizabeth Trottier, married Nov. 20, 1678
Nicolas, Sieur de La Vigne, died July 1, 1701, Batiscan, age 84.

Left France for "Nouvelle France" in the mid 1600's. His son Pierre
Rivard
took/was given the title "Sieur de la Nouette". Both names were used
hyphenated until about 1660, when, perhaps, the then Canadian Government
said,
"Alright you crazy Frenchmen, you can have only one last name, now!"
Many,
many French-Canadian families used "dit" names to separate their large
families
from their brothers' and cousins' large families.

E-mail from Jean-Marc Sincennes (January 2007):
It is misleading to write Louis or Claude as being the father of Denis. I went to France, in DIJON and search directly in the archives in 1989, and 2001. I never was able to find the birth certificate of Denis. Still working on it. The archives of la COTE D'OR, department of Burgundy are on internet. It is thousands of pages to look through.
I am a direct descendant of Denis PETITOT. My family name SINCENNES comes from SAINT-SEINE. Same pronunciation.
