In the first notarized actconcerning h 2 CONC im, drawn on 8 September 1647 by Claude Lecoustre, ourancestor was requ 2 CONC ired to pay Pierre Legardeur de Repentigny the sum ofone hundred livres f 2 CONC or the purchase of some wheat. To guarantee theloan, he put up all of h 2 CONC is property as security. On 9 August 1653, theJournal of the Jesuits re 2 CONC ported that Francois was chosen for theimportant office of mayor of the c 2 CONC itizens of the Quebec region wholived at the Longue Pointe, which would b 2 CONC ecome future parish ofSainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. That same year, Francois sold twooxen to Romain de T 2 CONC repagny, for the sum of 300 livres, payable to himin silver, in beaver p 2 CONC elts, or in valid currency. In 1663, the year ofthe founding of the Sov 2 CONC ereign Council, this Quebecois pioneer became,accoridng the Msgr David G 2 CONC osselin, "one of the principal inhabitantsof the region and he had the c 2 CONC onfidence of the authorities and thecolonists."(10) That same year also m 2 CONC arked the departure from thepaternal hearth of two of the children, Mar 2 CONC guerite and Charles, inorder to marry. It also tolled the knell for Jea 2 CONC n Guyon, Marie'sfather. His death led to a family quarrel, which lasted f 2 CONC ive years,over the settling of his estate. The Sovereign Council finall 2 CONC y had tostep in to decide this affair and to resolve the details. 2 CONT 2 CONT A MILITIA CAPTAIN ON THE BEAUPRE COAST 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1667 the general census of the inhabitants of New France notes thatF 2 CONC rancois Belanger had fifty arpents under cultivation and thirteenanimal 2 CONC s, which made him one of the richest property owners of thattime.(11) I 2 CONC n 1669, the year the militia was established in the colony,Francois was n 2 CONC amed captain of the Beaupre coast. According to J.-Edmond Roy, the capt 2 CONC ians "were, so to speak, the head's of themunicipal organization in eac 2 CONC h village. They had to carry out thegovernors' ordinances, as well as s 2 CONC upervise the construction andmaintenance of the roads."(12) 2 CONT 2 CONT AN HONEST MAN BUT HARD IN BUSINESS 2 CONT 2 CONT Francois Belanger earned a reputation as an honest but hard man withwho 2 CONC m to do business. He had an argument with his brother-in-law SimonGuyon a 2 CONC nd had to resort to the Sovereign Council for recourse. Thislitigation l 2 CONC asted until 21 April 1670, at which time Francois wasforced to loosen h 2 CONC is purse strings. A little earlier he had lostanother lawsuit to his fo 2 CONC rmer partner Masse Gravel. The councilors,undoubtedly exasperated by hi 2 CONC s penchant for suits, begged him to makehis apologies to the intendant. 2 CONT 2 CONT "As we have seen," writes Leonides Belanger, "our mand did not haveany l 2 CONC uck with his suit and it was certainly not willingly that he musthave m 2 CONC ade his apology. This also proves to us that he was stubbornlyset in hi 2 CONC s own ideas a little too much. Better educated perhaps thanthe majority o 2 CONC f his fellow citizens, he sought to impose his will onthem in a thousan 2 CONC d and one ways."(13) 2 CONT 2 CONT Nor did Francois get along with his son-in-law, Bertrand Chesnay de laG 2 CONC arenne, on the subject of their accounts. Not content to act forhimself 2 CONC , he interfered in the affairs of his daughter Mathurine, widowof Jean M 2 CONC aheu, concerning a house situated in the Lower Town ofQuebec, and borde 2 CONC ring the one belonging to defendants Etienne Blanchonand Anne Convent, h 2 CONC is wife.(14) In 1674, Belanger again had troublewith his neighbor Masse G 2 CONC ravel concerning a boundry between theirproperties established by the s 2 CONC urveyor Jean Guyon dit Dubuisson. Quitesimply put, Masse wanted Francoi 2 CONC s to stop bothering him about theexact placement of the line. Again, th 2 CONC e matter ended up on the agendaof the Sovereign Council, which gave him a 2 CONC nother opportunity to lose alawsuit, his last. 2 CONT 2 CONT SEIGNEUR OF BONSECOURS 2 CONT 2 CONT When incessantly involved in protests and demands, one usually ends upb 2 CONC y longing for a more tranquil life. On 1 July 1677, Francois Belangerob 2 CONC tained a vast concession from Governor Frontenac; a league infrontage b 2 CONC y two leages in depth on the south bank of the river. Afterforty years o 2 CONC f struggle and constant work,our ancestor had suddenlybecome the Seigne 2 CONC ur of Bonsecours (L'Islet). This concession wasplaced on record by the S 2 CONC overeign Council on 24 October 1680.(15) In1709 the engineer Gedeon de C 2 CONC atalogne spoke of it as follows: 2 CONT 2 CONT "The land there is rather level, sprinkled with plowed up stones, andma 2 CONC rginally produces all sorts of grains, vegetables and pasturage. Thefru 2 CONC it trees produce abundantly, and the natural woods are a mixture ofall s 2 CONC pecies."(16) 2 CONT 2 CONT The Census of 1681 places the Belanger family in the seigneury ofBellec 2 CONC hasse, of which the fief of Bonsecours was a part. Four servantsworked f 2 CONC or the new seigneur: Jean de la Voye, Barthelemy Gobeil,Pierre Lafaye a 2 CONC nd Pierre Mataule. The move had been made but recentlybecause Francois h 2 CONC ad only cleared five arpents. 2 CONT 2 CONT On 25 October 1685, he bequeathed all of his remaining property to hiss 2 CONC on Jacques, in return for good and loyal service.(17) This donationincl 2 CONC uded his lands at Bonsecours, a house, a barn, a mill, a mare,three oxe 2 CONC n, three cows, wagons, etc. Marie Guyon ratified this act on25 April 16 2 CONC 87, in a document which indicated that she had become awidow.(18) Franc 2 CONC ois had probably died the preceding winter while Mariewould live for ab 2 CONC out another ten years. The registry ofCap-Saint-Ignace mentions her bur 2 CONC ial act, on 1 October 1696.
