I love this tech talk about Ubuntu, however I want to share that it is also a humanistic-centered philosophy, which calls for global solidarity and a united struggle for social justice. Joan
Julie and Phil,I’m thinking that Sugar, indeed, will transform me into a Linux-centric geek.Is this true? Joan
‘Lil XO doesn’t come with a Spreadsheet Activity. Dan Bricklin (who is best known for bringing the spreadsheet to personal computers) has been porting his online Wiki spreadsheet to run under Sugar on the XO laptop. Built mostly on Javascript a very early test version is available at http://www.peapodcast.com/sgi/olpc/socialcalc
Other folks are creating a Python based spreadsheet. There is an early version that can be installed on an XO available at http://olivier.friard.free.fr/software/ppss/index.php
The XO has three buttons in the top row that may be used to get to the Neighborhood window
, the Group window
and Home
I found it annoying to have the frame appear suddenly when I got the mouse close to a hot corner. Read the rest of this entry » »
I’ve started using a two button with scroll mouse. It has made everything much easier for me with my adult size fingers. I can also copy and paste between windows! This is really a wonderful feature as some of the commands we’ve been typing in the terminal window are long.
To share Write Activity documents with MS Office the activity must be modified. Once modified Write Activity documents may be saved as a MS Office file.
To modify go to
- Terminal activity
- type su -l
- type cd /usr/share/activities/Write.activity
- type the following all on one line
- mv keybindings.xml keybindings.xml.org
Julie, My 3 grandkids are going to get one of the ‘Lil XOs next week. Before I give it to them, I already know their first question: Can we create a journal file for homework and then send to Mom to print on her printer? I don’t know this answer, so I have to be ready.Thanks.Joan
The 2 ‘Lil XOs have arrived from OLPC. Before Joan left for the ranch we worked on upgrading one of the new ones — we upgraded the OS, installed Opera and Adobe Flashplayer and got it connected to the wireless at home. We also worked on improving the blog notes.
I’m going to work on the third XO and get it to the same level as the other 2. After that I’m going to work on using the XOs as ebook readers. I want to get SD cards working for the extra storage the SD cards will provide. And I keep forgetting to install Java; so far I haven’t needed but I can imagine that some things won’t work correctly without it.
Keep the power cord in a matching lime green mesh bag. Walk into any Computer Science department, while carrying ‘Lil XO. Play YouTube video of Yes We Can music video. Go to Starbucks and establish connectivity. Email adult son from ‘Lil XO; I used to have computer envy of him. No more. Create town’s first XO user group. Establish first mesh with any stranger. Send a video message to all of the grandkids. Explain some of the eToys to the grands.
Why? Why go to extra work when the built in browser activity on the XO appears to work well. That’s what I thought until I tried to play the Obama “Yes We Can” music video in the browser and it just spun and spun. I enjoyed the Obama music video and was showing it to a friend on my Mac Book Pro when I thought let’s view it on the XO. We’ve all commented on the display, how nice it is for such a small screen.
