Eric,

Have you upgraded to Opera? If you try to use the built in Browse activity downloaded files get stored in the journal activity. Files stored via the journal activity are here:

/home/olpc/.sugar/default/datastore/store

but the name won't match the jdk you downloaded. If you do the following 2 commands:

cd /home/olpc/.sugar/default/datastore/store
ls -ldt *

the file that is at the top of the list might be the jdk. You could try substituting the file name where I have jdk*.

Another thing you could try is to use a different computer and download the jdk to a USB drive. You could connect the USB drive to the XO and access it via the terminal.

Good luck,
Julie

I don't see an option on the sun download page to save to a particular directory- do you know what the default location is for downloads on the XO? I think I can do the rest if I know that path. thanks for the great instructions- I'm trying to get 6 XO's running java so that they can run some school web-software.
thamks,

For the moment PPSS (Python Powered SpreadSheet) is only a Microsoft-Windows that allows the user to use the Python programming language to write some functions in a spread sheet.
This project is at an early stage of development and there is no version for Linux available...

Joan,

I tested sharing files between Abiword and MS Office and it worked for me. The grandkids just need to remember to save in the correct file type.

Julie,

OK, as I understand it, 'Lil XO has a Baby AbiWord, which makes perfectly good sense as she is so tiny. However, she is growing and developing, and now she can handle the Big AbiWord, which Microsoft Word had open and close. If this is possible, the grandkids will be thrilled. Thanks.

Joan,

We need to upgrade the AbiWord program (it is the word processor program) as it is my understanding that the full AbiWord program will create documents that can be opened and read by Microsoft Word.

I'll work on the upgrade this weekend so you can do it before you send the 'Lil Xo to the grans.

OK, now let's see if I understand:

Sugar is not sugar, and Red Hat is not Red Hat, right?

Sugar on our 'Lil X0 is the interface which make it all so very sweet. For example, we first learn about Home, Group, and Neighborhood - kids and adults will intuitively press those little buttons up on the top left and intuitively begin to move around with people they know.

And, now I've learned that Red Hat Mag is not the Red Hat Society - actually, very, very different.

It's amazing to see what 'Lil XO is teaching me.
